A5 Auction -- cabinets seem larger?

    2 ALTEC LARGE A-5 SPEAKER SYSTEMS 805 515 N500C ! ALL ORIGINAL !! | eBay

do these seem a bit larger than normal? or just an odd phot artifact?

thoughts? besides a high list price (of course) -- seems like a nice package deal for someone with deep pockets though....

*Edit,.... found my answer... Early A5s seem to have used the H110 cabinets, from what I read...

anyone have experience with the H110 cabinet?
    comparison to 825/828 cabinets?

    be well y'all......

This is at least the 2nd time around for those with no price adjustment.

AudiobyGoodwill posted these back a week or so ago during their previous auction.

They're rare, and full of good stuff. But, i think the seller's valuation is a few grand past optimistic.

    sorry about the re-post!

I do agree, Allen will re-list repeatedly without adjusting...
but if it takes to long to move, and you're local - he'll deal a bit...

takes awhile though before he becomes receptive IME

    I can argue either side.

Those are probably just rare enough, and they're nice and complete, if he holds out long enough like into the selling season as the summer closes down, he just might get what he's asking or close to it. But, it won't be from any of the regulars on this board or any other enthusiast that i know personally.

    sorry about the re-post!
No need to apologize IMO. Those are certainly Altecs that are worth seeing twice, or more even.

This is the third auction, I believe. I too think the price is high...... but agree that if he waits long enough he make get something close to it.

Only as an A6, our HS had one.

Not side by side, but an apples n' oranges comparison since I used a 604E, which to my ears doesn't compare well with the early big horn 604 plus the 'bass' horns have radically different loading BWs. Factor in that this was while I was in HS for the A6 and in my late 20s when I experimented with the 'E' in a DIY 825, about all I can say at this point in time is that they both made great party speakers, but not much in the way of HIFI.

Hey Greg, do you think the 604E would do well as an HT center channel?

Re: A5 Auction -- cabinets seem larger?

    Greets!

Depends on how far back and off axis the listening position is if you want to meet THX/DD/DTS cinema reference.

What many folks don't realize is that in many HIFI and most HT apps one needs the polar response of a 1005 or 1505 or their equivalent CD horn for best overall performance and in retrospect, no doubt why when Altec made prototypes for the then new THX specs they chose the 511 and 311-90 depending on seating capacity/spec'd distance from screen.

Then there’s the issue of speaker mains compatibility that from a strictly technical POV are a poor match at best to other than matching 604s.
